The 3-Step Skincare Routine for Men Who Hate Routines

Skincare doesn't need 10 steps or 10 products. Here's the no-BS, 3-step routine — cleanse, protect, style — that takes one minute a day.

Short version: Cleanse, protect, style. Three steps, one minute, done. Wash your face with a proper cleanser, put on a mineral sunscreen, sort your hair with a cream that also shields it from the sun. That's a complete men's routine — no 10-step nonsense.

Most men fall into one of two camps. Either you do nothing — a bar of soap and whatever's in the shower — or you've been told skincare means ten products, five acids, and a bathroom shelf that looks like a chemistry lab. Both are wrong.

Here's the truth no one selling you a 10-step routine wants to admit: your skin needs three things. Get those right and you're ahead of 95% of men.

Why do men overcomplicate skincare?

They don't — the industry does it for them. More steps mean more products to sell. But skin doesn't care about the number of bottles. It cares about three jobs getting done: staying clean, staying protected, and not being stripped dry in the process.

Everything beyond those three is optional. Nice-to-have, not need-to-have. So we cut the routine down to what actually moves the needle.

What's the minimum skincare routine that actually works?

Three steps. Roughly one minute, once or twice a day.

Step 1 — Cleanse (20 seconds)

Washing your face with hand soap or a harsh bar is the most common mistake men make. Soap is alkaline — often pH 9–10. Your skin sits around 4.5–5.5. Strip that balance every day and your skin overproduces oil to compensate, which is exactly why "oily" skin often gets oilier the harder you scrub it.

Use a proper cleanser instead — one that lifts dirt, sweat, sunscreen and pollution without stripping your natural oils. Morning and night. Twenty seconds. Done.

Step 2 — Protect (20 seconds)

If you do one thing for your skin, make it this. Up to 80–90% of visible skin ageing — lines, dark spots, dullness — comes from UV exposure, not age and not genetics. Sun.

A mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide) sits on the surface and reflects UV away, without the heat build-up or sting of chemical formulas. Good modern ones go on invisible — no ghostly white cast on brown skin. SPF 30–50 for daily use. This is the highest-return 20 seconds in your day.

Step 3 — Style (20 seconds)

Sort your hair with a hair cream that gives flexible hold without the crunch of old-school gel — bonus points if it also carries UV protection, because your hair and scalp take the same sun your face does. Restylable through the day, no greasy residue.

Three steps. One minute. That's the whole thing.

Do Indian men need a different routine?

Yes — in emphasis. India throws more at your skin than most places: a high UV index nearly year-round, heat, humidity, sweat, and heavy city pollution. That combination makes two of the three steps matter even more here:

  • Cleansing, because sweat, sebum and pollution clog pores fast — and helmet straps and masks make it worse.
  • Sun protection, because the UV load is relentless, and higher-melanin skin tans and pigments unevenly when it's left unprotected.

The routine doesn't change. The reasons just get stronger.

How long should a skincare routine take?

Sixty seconds. If a routine takes longer than that, you won't stick to it — and a routine you skip does nothing. That's the whole idea behind One Minute Care: the best routine isn't the most thorough one, it's the one you'll actually do every day.

Start with the three steps. Build the habit. You can always add more later — but most men never need to.

Frequently asked

Do men really need a skincare routine?

At minimum, yes — cleanse and protect. Men's skin tends to produce more oil and men often spend more time outdoors, so daily cleansing and sunscreen go a long way in preventing breakouts, tanning and premature ageing. A complete routine can be just three steps and about a minute a day.

Is regular soap bad for your face?

Bar and hand soaps are usually alkaline (around pH 9–10), while facial skin sits near pH 4.5–5.5. Washing with soap strips your natural oils, which can trigger more oil production and dryness. A pH-balanced cleanser cleans without that damage.

Do I need sunscreen if I stay indoors most of the day?

Mostly yes. UVA rays pass through windows and clouds and drive long-term ageing. If you get any daylight — commuting, sitting near windows, stepping out — a daily mineral SPF still protects you.

How long should a men's skincare routine take?

About one minute. The three core steps — cleanse, protect with sunscreen, and style — take roughly 20 seconds each. Keeping it short is the point: you're far more likely to actually stick with it.
